When I visited Walk Your Plans Madison, not only did I feel like a kid in a candy store, I caught a major design dilemma.

Walk Your Plans Madison opened my eyes to a fresh perspective on design and creativity. This unique experience not only offered a chance to view drawings in a completely immersive way but also provided valuable interpretation that I now incorporate into my design services. In this post, I’ll share the highlights of my trip, how I persuaded my client to change their design, and how these insights have influenced the way I approach design projects.
Discovering Walk Your Plans Madison
I learned about how this new technology exists back in 2018 or 19. It launched in Australia back in 2017. It felt like a very far reach even when it became available in the USA because it didn't exist in my home state of Wisconsin. Being a new mom in 2023 who hardly travels out of state, I knew that this was something I may never get to experience. Then, things changed for me while at a networking event in 2025. I learned that there was a location recently added in Madison, Wisconsin - about a 55 minute drive away! I couldn't contain my curiosity and excitement about this technology any longer and decided to call and schedule my first visit!

Emphasizing Critical Design Decisions
While at my first visit to Walk Your Plans, I was able to confirm a design decision I was hoping my client would make. I explained that the pathway was going to be too narrow, which could pose challenges for functionality and movement. While walking the plan, I was able to FEEL that design. It felt like I would be walking into a tunnel - which is not a good feeling when you enter your kitchen throughout the day every single day. I promptly shared this insight with my client, emphasizing the importance of considering the previous design. Showing it in life like scale allowed me as the designer to persuade my client to make that vital design decision. Ultimately they decided on the previous design; moving the fridge over to the window wall instead. This will allow the wall to be completely open and not feel like you'd be walking through a tunnel when entering.
Turning My Experience at Walk Your Plans into the next Client Experience
My first experience at Walk Your Plans has significantly elevated the services I provide to my clients. When clients express a desire to change their layout or visualize how their home addition will function, I emphasize this service every single time. Although it may involve some additional costs, the investment is truly worthwhile. This approach minimizes design dilemmas and costly change orders that could arise if either I or the client were unable to fully grasp how a layout would feel.
